Tilbury Container Services (TCS) operates a container terminal covering more than 34 ha of land with three modern berths. With the introduction of a second riverside berth, some 600 m of quay is available, enabling two large containerships to be worked simultaneously. The terminal seven ship-to-shore cranes, and direct road, rail and sea feeder links, with in excess of 20 per cent of its annual throughput is transported by rail. TCS offers the largest specialist blown-air reefer facility in the northern hemisphere where, in an average year, 25,000 containers of perishable cargoes are handled, in addition to considerable quantities of less sensitive cargoes such as onions. State-of-the-art IT systems ensure the service is consistently fast, highly efficient and user-friendly. TCS offers a quality-assured service: this was the first deep-sea container terminal to achieve BS 5750 Part Two (ISO 9002) accreditation for all areas of the operation, and ISO 14001 accreditation was subsequently achieved. TCS offers:
- a unique locational advantage: TCS is the only dedicated, modern direct-access deep-water terminal within the Port of London
- accessibility: TCS has deep water, with a minimum of 12.5 m alongside at all times. Its berths within the enclosed docks have a minimum maintained depth of 10.7 m. A new riverside berth adds a further 300 m of quay face, and some 16 acres of container stacking area, enabling two large container ships to work at the same time.
- flexibility: TCS is open for business 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- productivity: TCS has an impressive productivity record, both for ship-to-shore operations and gate-to-stack operations.
- good market location: TCS provides the shortest and most direct route into London, the nation's largest market area and, as such, offers strategically-placed hub facilities. TCS is also competitively placed for access to a range of main industrial destinations in the UK.
- inland transportation: TCS is located on the Thames, adjacent to the M25 London orbital motorway, and less than 45 km from the centre of London. TCS also has its own dedicated rail and feeder links to all major commercial centres in the UK and beyond.
- a unique facility: TCS is the largest blown-air container terminal in the Northern hemisphere, and also provides in excess of 250 integral reefer plugs and 300 fantainer plugs.
- specialisation: TCS is within Tilbury Freeport and is fully approved for the handling of animal products and livestock.
- systems: TCS's cranes and straddles are all RDT-linked to sophisticated IT systems for yard-and-ship management. Two new Paceco gantry cranes with extended reach and twin-lift capability, enable containers (up to 16-wide) to be handled on deck.
- experience: TCS was the UK's first container terminal. TCS draws strength from the in-depth experience of the management team, giving peace of mind to customers.
